Hi Cuong, Thanks for your very valid comment. I agree that the advantaged will benefit first, and your are right, as with all development activities, the challenge remains as to how to ensure the spread of benefits is more equitable. I have commente…

Hi Roger and all, I can definitely agree with your view on this definition. I just want to take it further and add that CBT should put the ownership, participation and empowerment of the entire community at the heart of its development process. Whil…

Hi Roger, great that you won funds for CBT marketing on the internet. As a manager of a small grassroots tour operator and homestay provider, I see that ICT is indeed a huge barrier rural Asian communities face along with the language barrier. What…

I checked out toursbylocals.com; shows promise for use by rural Asian communities. Asian Encounters has been engaged to consult on CBT marketing and has also won funds to implement a project for CBT marketing on the internet. It's basically a one-ma…

Agree with you fully on this Melissa; for me it's all about learning from others about their culture and lifestyles. If we ever jointly develop a definition, this should be part of it. At the moment I'm encouraged by the contributions (including you…

I like this a lot and its great to see that somebody is recognising a need for profits from tourism to be directed more towards locals at the end of the chain, and the obstacles they face in marketing and ICT. Apart from this website, is there anyth…

CBT in Bangladesh - Prof. Lutfor's proposal

I am re-posting Prof Lutfor's message to me describing what sounds like an ideal CBT location. It would be good to find someone who can mobilise the community towards making a success of it.

Village - Ikrail is located in the centre of a circular shaped river island in Bangladesh. The island is full of natural and valuable resources. Lands are fertile and able to produce many kinds of fruits and vegetables. It is full of herbs, shrubs, plants and trees. It has wonderful climate… Continue

Dr Taleb Rifai the new head of the United Nations World Tourism Organisation

During a lecture at Hong Kong Polytechnic University on 9th Feb 2010, Dr Taleb Rifai the new head of the United Nations World Tourism Organisation admitted that the tourism industry has failed to make a connection with the world’s major problems, such as poverty. When I put it to him that much tourism in Asia involves taking people to destinations whose residents were mostly poor and who don’t enjoy much benefit or share in the revenues that the industry generates, he stated that he is against r… Continue

Asian Development Bank says "Developing community-based tourism should be given importance."

"Developing community-based tourism is important. Asymmetric distribution of benefits and costs in the tourism sector remains a challenge. At present, the benefits of tourism largely bypass the majority of poor in the Greater Mekong Sub-region. New models of tourism development are required that involve poor local communities. These models should include the development of CBT products in areas attractive for tourists where the poor live, and the establishment of supply chains

TRUE Community-Based Tourism

I attended a tourism conference recently that claimed to focus on Community Based Tourism (CBT). Actually most of the presentations and people attending worked for travel operators that were based in cities and who sent tourists into rural areas where they stayed in lodges that were owned and managed by the travel operators but who hired local residents as staff. They call this community-based tourism. I don’t!!

For me, TRUE CBT occurs when the residents of a destination own and operate their o… Continue

Tourism in Bario, Sarawak, Malaysia. A Case Study of Pro-Poor Community Based Tourism Integrated into Community Development

Tourism in Bario, Sarawak, Malaysia: A case study of pro-poor community based tourism integrated into community development

Asia Pacific Journal of Tourism Research, Publisher: Taylor & Francis, Apr 27, 2009

Abstract

There are divergent views concerning the efficacy of pro-poor community based tourism as a tool for community development. Whilst theoretical perspectives give rise to optimism, the evidence leaves some doubt. There is merit therefore… Continue

Hi Roger,
I like your site. How long has it been up? I see just the one China link to Moon Hill. I actually stayed with them about 5 years ago and had a good experience,. Wondering if you were getting other leads in other areas. You are based in Hong King, right? Have you looked at the WWOOF attempt to put people together? Seems like they are off to a slow start. I am interested in homestay experiences for my 14 yo daughter and I. We want to brush up our Chinese and will be there for a month in July.

Dear Dr. Roger

I would like to forward to you my sincere thanks for your consideration. My superviser and I finalized the paper entitled: "Factors affecting adoption of ICT among rural users – a case study of ICT Center in Iran" is attached. We hope it fits the standards of a relevant ISI Journal for peer review publication. We are honored to have it co-published through your cooperation in enriching the paper for an ISI Journal such as "The Journal of Rural Health".

Warm regards

Hi Roger,

Thanks for your response. After my functional requirements analysis, the project will be carried on by the initiators (InfoBridge, Retour Foundation and RASTA Wayanad, Kerala, India). I ofcourse hope to stay involved, but whatever the case, I think they will be happy to have this project featured here as soon as it goes live.

I also spotted that a big ICT4D event is coming up in London UK (in December if I recall correctly), maybe of interest to you as well?

Kind regards,

Sander
