Hi Rik,
Thanks; interesting to hear about the continuing ADB project; I've had discussions since a while back with Alfredo Perdiguero, Steven Schipani and of course Paul Rogers. Initially, there was some scepticism about introducing computers and the internet to the communities that they were working with, which was kinda understandable then, but I sense things are changing. Eventually, I was able to secure some small seed funding to set up some equipment in the tourism office in Muang Sing, which I think they appreciated and I trained the staff there how to use the Asian Encounters facility for promoting their tourism. I also met a couple of times with Thavipet Oula who was very supportive, which helped with dealing with the tourism officials. Having worked on another project in Laos involving ICTs, my sense is the time is approaching when some pump-priming applications such as eCBT could give a much-needed boost to the idea of rural connectivity there.
Thanks. In addition to working for SNV I am now also the International Ecotourism Planner on the ADB Sustainable Tourism Development Project in Lao PDR. Looking forward to discuss ways on how we can collaborate.
Rik
Hi Rik, welcome to the network; and looking forward to any comments/inputs you may have. I've been having discussions with SNV colleagues in Vietnam and Laos over several years on promoting CBT on the internet.
