Namdeat Mai is a traditional Akha village in the district of Muang Sing, in the northern Lao province of Luang Namtha. This part of Laos is well known for its ethnic variety, traditional lifestyles and mountainous terrain, all of which make for ideal trekking. So far, tourism has not seriously damaged either the environment or the culture. Half of the Muang Singh District's land area lies in the Nam Ha National Protected Area, well known for a range of ecotourism activities. Due to its mountainous terrain, the weather here can get quite cool, with temperatures generally not topping 30 degree Celsius in the hot season (March-April) and dropping to as low as 0 degree Celsius in December-January. During May-October, the south-western monsoon brings the annual rains and marks the beginning of the new agricultural cycle. Trekking in the forests and through the villages of Luang Namtha makes you a partner in improving people’s lives and in preserving the environment. Single or multi day trekking tours led by trained local guides depart daily, including village visits and home stays. Many other activities such as boat tours, special tours for wildlife trekking or learning about rural lifestyles have been developed for visitors. The communities have been involved in tourism development and are actively participating and receiving a significant part of the benefits. |
