Asian Encounters

Hi all…I am not sure if I am posting my experiences in the correct place, but this seems as good as a place as any :)

While I have stayed at a number of home stays during my research work and travels, there is one (or a group of home stays) that I would like in particular that I would
like to write about. These home stays are in Colombia, in the East towards
Venezuala, and sit outside a national park called Parque National El Cocuy, a
must visit place for trekkers and climbers. The national park is beautiful,
with several snow-covered peaks above 5000 meters, lakes at 4700 meters high
and if you are lucky (or unlucky) you may come across b
ears, pumas,
chinchilla rabbits, mountain tapirs, white-tailed deers and many species of
bird.

Only a few guidebooks mention details about how to get to, where to stay and what to do in El Cocuy, so do your homework before you go (although I have heard the newest
edition of Lonely Planet does dedicate some space to El Cocuy).

Anyway back to the home stay!  There are several home stays in very small villages outside of the boundaries of the national
park, the home stays range from small homes to haciendas (ranch style farms). I
stayed in Hacienda La Esperanza a small 200 year old farm house just on the
boundary of the national park, it is accessible by car (well, milk-truck), but
the road ends at the hacienda. The family is warm and attentive, and the son
(who was managing the accommodation at the time) was keen to share stories of
the history of the hacienda, the area, the operations of the farm and beat
guests in card games. Due to the remote location of the hacienda, comforts such
as internet, TV, mobile phone coverage are not available, however there is
electricity and wood fires, and despite the lack of comforts, the son was an
amazing cook (a trained chef).

Tourism is relatively new to the area as it was previously FARC (Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia) controlled, up until two years ago or so. Walks from the
hacienda include the Laguna Grande de la Sierra.

I would like to hear from others if they have visited and stayed in other home stays in the region.

Great post Stan, right on target! Although our focus is Asia, it's great to hear from other parts, especially such a good example of the homestay experience as this. would love to see some of your photos on the network..
